A fourth-tier club has knocked the Premier League champions out of the League Cup. Fleetwood Town, 18th in League Two, drew 1-1 with Arsenal at their own Highbury Stadium on Tuesday 27 October and won the penalty shootout 5-3. According to Inside World Football, it is the first time Fleetwood have reached the quarter-finals of the competition.

How the tie went

The ground holds 5,327 people, a figure Al Jazeera gives for the venue. Aaron Loupalo-Bi, a loan player from Fulham, scored in the 21st minute after a mistake by Arsenal’s Marli Salmon. Fleetwood held that lead to half-time. Arsenal then brought on Martin Odegaard, and Viktor Gyokeres equalised about five minutes later, his first goal of the season, as Inside World Football records it.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta made nine changes from the side that beat Everton 2-0, with Sunday’s Premier League trip to Liverpool in mind, Al Jazeera reports. That context matters, and Arsenal still created chances. Ben White and Odegaard were both denied by Fleetwood’s goalkeeper before the end. Arsenal’s Max Dowman was sent off in the 85th minute for kicking out at Harrison Neal, so the visitors finished with ten men.

The shootout

Both sides scored their first three penalties. Then Jay Lynch saved from Bruno Guimaraes, and the teenage defender Conor Haughey scored the winning kick. Fleetwood’s manager, Matt Lawlor, wept as supporters came onto the pitch, according to Al Jazeera.

Arteta praised his players’ attitude and intensity afterwards. He said Arsenal had to take more of their chances, noting that with so many opportunities they “have to score three, four or five,” as quoted by Inside World Football.

Where it sits among Arsenal’s cup exits

Al Jazeera calls the result the biggest shock in League Cup history and lists earlier cup defeats for Arsenal against lower-ranked opposition. The table shows how this one compares by the tier gap.

Bradford in 2012 is the closest parallel: a fourth-tier side, and a penalty shootout. This one carries a bigger gap because Arsenal are the current Premier League champions. Fleetwood are also a small club by any measure, playing in a ground of 5,327 seats.

What it means for Fleetwood

The quarter-final is a new high for the club in this competition, and a first for the town’s supporters to celebrate in the League Cup. It also arrives at an awkward moment in their league season. Al Jazeera notes they had lost their previous two league games, to Exeter City and Cheltenham, and they sit 18th in League Two. They host Bristol Rovers in League Two on Saturday.

The draw for the quarter-finals has not yet been reported in the sources used here, so Fleetwood’s next cup opponent is not known. Neither source gives prize money or attendance figures, and we have not estimated them. What the night does show is simple. A club with a 5,327-seat ground took a tie to the end against the league’s champions, and won it from 12 yards. For the supporters who came onto the pitch, that is the story, whatever Arsenal’s rotation says about the squad.
